Semiaquatic Staphylinidae (Rove Beetles) of Michigan

Introduction

This large family of slender beetles are characteristic in having short, truncated elytra that leaves several abdominal segments dorsally visible. The great majority of species are terrestrial, but a few are associated with aquatic environments (peri- and semiaquatic), principally with shore-line environments and the surface of littoral habitats. Of the groups known to be associated with aquatic habitats, there are 70 species in 6 genera found in Michigan, with another 9 species that may be found based on regional records. Psephidonus is common under stones at or near the edge of running water. Carpelimus and Thinobius is generally found along littoral areas of lakes and rivers among leaf litter. Not all species of Bledius and Stenus are semiaquatic/periaquatic, and provisionally terrestrial taxa are included in the list based on citations contained in the literature listed; museum and other collection specimens have have only begun to be examined.

Genera are donoted in bold green; species denoted in bold blue have been recorded in Michigan; other species denoted in bold are likely to occur based on their known distribution. You can use the Find function in your web browser to locate families, genera, and species. Synonomous species (indented) are listed below the current valid species (denoted in bold) with its taxonomic status indicated.
